The Rise of the Disney Empire

Disney has become an empire in the digital media world. Disney started off back in 1928 with Steamboat Willy, a short film that featured the infamous Mickey Mouse. Then, Disney became famous in the golden age of Disney starting with Snow White then adding on an astounding 156 movies by now. That doesn’t include all the companies that Disney has added on over the years.

We all know the main companies that Disney owns like Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm, but there is much more in Disney’s hands. Disney owns both ABC, Fox, and ESPN- which are big companies in themselves.

This means Disney owns History Channel, National Geographic, Lifetime, and 21st Century Fox. Disney owns 27% of the entertainment industry with Warner Bros in second with 15.5%. That is quite a difference when it comes to competition. Entertainment isn’t the only thing that Disney gets money from.

There’s the obvious merchandise that they make to go along with their movies and TV shows, which makes up about 90% of their total revenue.

Disney World is the most visited theme park in the world- with Disneyland at a close second. Disney parks have been always stated as the happiest place on earth. Everyone wants to go there which raises the prices. A ticket just get into the park is $89 per day, with more money to add extra special offers. This does not include a hotel to stay in and food.

This is just to show how much power Disney has. It may not be the kind of power we recognize most often, but it is still a very big power over our culture.
