The Best Parts of Model Government

By Lauren Meacham, Door County

Upon joining Youth in Government, delegates are informed of the Model Government Conference in Madison. Returning delegates are prepared and waiting for their return to the capital. First-year delegates are anxiously awaiting their first arrival to the Capitol and to take their place amid the other delegates of the program areas. Model Government is the concluding destination among delegates, who have spent weeks perfecting bills, strengthening arguments, and producing articles. What makes Model Government intriguing? What moments have defined the 2023 Model Government?

I spoke with Symone Sandoval of the Door County delegation just after her bill was passed by both the Assembly and the Senate. “I like that people actually care about this,” says Sandoval. Her bill was on allowing immigrants to obtain drivers licenses. I also asked her about her favorite parts of the Madison weekend. “Probably being able to go to Ian’s and getting pizza and salad,” says Sandoval, “It’s the best salad I’ve ever had in my life.”

After interviewing multiple delegates, it’s easy to say that Ian’s Pizza is the most popular spot for lunch. According to Bella Dereszkiewicz-Hodowany, Ian’s has an amazing Caesar salad. The food in Madison is one of the best things about Model Government. It seems that almost every restaurant on State Street has had at least one delegate dining there. Multiple delegates have recommended Tavernakaya, a Japanese restaurant with amazing sushi. Starbucks has also been a very popular location. Delegates have gone to get a cup of coffee before they have a bill to debate or a case to argue. Many delegates would say that the diverse eating options of Madison is the best thing about attending Model Government.

One of the most important things about Model Government is expressing your own opinions. “I thought a lot of the bills were going to be similar,” says Lily Suttner of the Fox Cities delegation, “but everyone has their own.” From arguing for an act for steroid taxation to an act banning turf fields, every delegate has their own priorities, opinions, and arguments. “It’s very diverse,” comments Nana Abena Asiamah from the Green Bay delegation.

I interviewed the Youth Governor, Alana Rabach. “I have a unique role this year. I like interacting with all the chambers and the delegates,” she answered after I asked her for her opinion on Model Government this year. “I am going to remember how amazing everyone was, and how excited everyone was. How monumental Youth in Government has been for so many people and their ideas.”

From the crazy karaoke at the hotel, to exploring the beauty of the Capitol Building, Model Government is an event that all delegates will remember for a long time. From multiple delegates, Model Government has been described as an unforgettable experience, and a perfect way to meet people.
