Madison’s Art and Architecture
By: Isabella Nervi
Madison, the capital city of Wisconsin, is uniquely placed on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. This geography serves as a perfect setting for the city’s colorful blend of art, culture, and history. In this article, we will explore three locations in Madison that show its dynamic architecture and artistic heritage, offering a deep look into what makes this city so vibrant.
First is the Wisconsin State Capitol. This building, which is in a style called Beaux-Arts, is not only the seat of government for Wisconsin but also a work of art in itself. The dome is the second tallest in the U.S., and the interior is decorated with beautiful murals, sculptures, and stained glass. Along with the symbolism of the capital being the center and heart of the city, it literally is. Madison’s city streets and buildings all surround the capitol building, which is in the city’s core. I have only seen the Wisconsin State Capitol building once, but it is definitely worth visiting if you find yourself there.
Second, The Chazen Museum, located on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, is well known for both art and architecture. The building itself is in a modern architectural style, while its art collection holds a wide range of art from different cultures and time periods. The museum offers free admission, and in addition hosts events, artist presentations, and music performances. The museum also hosts various temporary exhibits and offers a great opportunity to go and explore classical and modern art. I highly recommend taking a look.
Finally, the Allen Centennial Garden on the UW-Madison campus is an outdoor area that combines art and nature. The garden has a variety of landscapes, sculptures, and architectural elements that create a living art piece. It originally started out as a “living laboratory” for students who practiced horticulture and biological sciences. It was also used by students who were studying
landscape architecture. Now this area serves as a public place for relaxation and education. This location reminds me of the gardens surrounding The House on the Rock, which is another famous attraction a little ways outside of Madison. Of course, there are many other amazing places in the city of Madison, WI, and I highly encourage you to go explore them for yourself!
