Role of the Senate in Youth in Government

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a senator, debating laws and shaping policies? In the Youth in Government (YIG) Senate, delegates step into the shoes of real lawmakers, navigating the legislative process, debating bills, and making impactful decisions. Delegates in the Senate actively participate in the legislative process. It works similarly to the United States Senate: the YIG Senate reviews, debates, and votes on proposed bills. They work in an environment that follows parliamentary processes and legislative procedures.

The YIG Senate plays a vital role in the legislative process, focusing on four key areas: debating and passing bills, committee review, parliamentary procedures, and taking on leadership roles.  Debating and passing bills consists of youth senators discussing proposed legislation, making amendments, and ultimately voting on bills. Bills are then passed to the Youth House of Representatives for further approval. The Committee System is a group of members organized to ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed laws. Bills must pass through these committees before they can be brought to the Senate floor for debating and voting. Youth Senators follow structured debate rules to maintain an organized legislative process. Some students take on leadership roles that oversee debates, such as Senate President. The YIG Senate is an important part of the organization. They review, debate, and vote on proposed bills.
