State Dinner
By: Madelyn Beyers
The Wisconsin Youth in Government State Dinner is truly an event to remember. Throughout a delegate’s time in Madison, there are few things that will compare. The large buffet, engaging conversations, competitive speeches, and an accepting atmosphere create an environment that is hard to replicate. Stories are plentiful when it comes to the one special night where delegates from all over Wisconsin come together to enjoy a meal.
Here are a few things to expect:
First, the dinner includes a great selection of foods. Pastas, sweets, vegetables, meats, and more are all there in large supply. Delegates often say it’s the most enjoyable meal they eat in Madison, especially the pasta. Being sure to explore available options helps to make the YIG State Dinner more interactive and congenial. Also, after a hard day’s worth of work, enjoying a nice meal with friends is rewarding and definitely a wise choice.
Another thing to take into account is interacting with peers. YIG is notably a community of acceptance. There are few places that have created the same sort of climate. The State Dinner provides a rare and exact time where all delegates get time to mingle. Taking hold of this opportunity is critical. The friendships formed at YIG are unlike any other. This is a vital time to build and foster them. At the same time, one should be sure not to overwhelm themselves. There is plenty of time and nothing has to feel rushed.
Candidate speeches are given right after eating. During this time period, everyone is full and ready to change. Yet paying attention to the speeches is important. The delegates speaking are running to be the future leaders of YIG. Hearing them out allows delegates to vote with background knowledge as to who their candidates are. Here, the possible leaders give their case as to why they deserve the position. It takes a lot of planning and remaining respectful is important. The runners that speak are running for Youth Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Secretary of State. Candidates for other elected positions are held by the branches. These candidates are voted for by the entirety of YIG.
Overall, this opportunity is not one to be taken lightly. It is a chance for growth, friendships, and speaking up. So, for first year delegates, be sure to take it in. Madison is a place of legacy, and the Youth In Government State Dinner does not disappoint.
