Many schools and team sports in the United States use Native American names, logos and mascots. While some people think it’s respectful, some Native Americans communities think the opposite in regard to these images being used. Because people have different options about these issues, many lawmakers and schools have been discussing an act that would ban Native Americans mascots
One argument on the pro side for banning Native Americans mascots is that they may create stereotypes. A stereotype is when people think everyone in a group is the same. Some mascots show Native Americans in a way that is not accurate or respects their culture. Groups like the National Congress of American Indians have said that these mascots can harm how people understand Native Americans culture and communities.
On the converse side, some people think that the usage of mascots is meant to respect Native Americans by wearing them or using it as a mascot to honor them for their bravery and strength. For many schools and teams, these mascots have been with them for many years. Because of this, some people think removing them would take away an important part of their history.
Another part of the debate is how these mascots affect students and communities. Some Native Americans say that these mascots make them feel like their culture is being disrespected, whilst other Natives might not feel the same way. These differences in opinions make this issue more complicated for schools and lawmakers to decide on what is most beneficial for both students and Native communities.
These laws would require schools to change their mascots if they are based on Native American culture. The goal of these acts is often to promote, respect and understand the culture, and while also helping schools think about the symbols they use.
The debate about banning Native American mascots has many different thoughts surrounding it. Some people believe that if they get rid of Native American mascots it would help them prevent stereotypes and show them respect for Native cultures. Others think the mascot’s honor tradition. Because of the different thoughts this issue continues to be discussed in schools, sport teams, communities, and governments across the country.
