How the Political Climate of Today is Affecting Youth in Government Delegates

By: Anna Staudenmaier

The political and social unrest in America right now is something many Youth in Government delegates are watching very closely. YIG members are all passionate students who share a love for all things government-related, and we can see what has been happening during the past year. When something as significant as an attack on our nation’s capital or a second impeachment occurs, it causes many of us to perk up and pay attention.

While we are dealing with the uncertainty of today, many of us look to Youth and Government as a safe space to discuss these issues. YIG creates an environment where students can come in, ask questions about their government, and they can leave feeling confident in the information they gained.

After everything that has happened, from the Black Lives Matter Movement, to COVID-19, all the way to President Trump’s second impeachment, the past year has been one for the record books without a doubt.

Cross-cultural differences have created a rift in society, and YIG helps students come together to discuss their views respectfully. Youth in Government programs help open the door to a better future. When students work together during YIG, we see not what the world currently is but what it could be. Whether that be delegates in Nelson Assembly helping a new member with their bill, someone in the Supreme Court working on a case, or a delegate in the Media branch interviewing a fellow YIG member, there is help whenever you need it if you simply ask. That’s what makes Youth in Government delegates unique; they all tend to be caring and considerate students.

Youth in Government helps its members learn valuable real-world lessons. YIG offers infinite possibilities for growth, delegates can thrive in a safe environment for everyone. It encourages today’s youth to become active citizens and prepares delegates for adulthood. Youth in Government takes the time to talk about these current issues, and how they may affect the world around you. It teaches us the importance of our voice, showing us how to be true leaders.
