New Year, New Strain

After the turbulent year that we’ve had, it’s safe to say that the future can only look brighter. However, it’s important to stay aware and informed of the world around us, so let’s look at what 2021 has in store for us so far; just so we can stay on the top of our game.

In COVID updates, a new strain of the virus has appeared in places like the UK, the US, and 32 additional countries. A mutation of the virus, the B.1.1.7. variant, has posed many questions and ignited the fears of many with its mixed interpretations. Here’s what we actually know.

The genes of the initial COVID-19 virus have mutated into the B.1.1.7 variant, but it isn’t something wildly uncommon. Many viral infections mutate over time, thus our need for a flu shot every year. Additionally, Stuart Ray M.D., of Johns Hopkins, elaborates, “We have already seen multiple variants of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that are different from the version we first saw in China.” Not much is known about the effects and the longevity of the mutation, but some trials are being done to see if the new strain is more transmittable. With the return of students to school, the worries of increased cases are raised exponentially.

In response to these concerns, Dr. Sally Goza, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, says, “It really will depend on how well can you mask and distance in a school setting.” Staying masked up has been proven to be successful and effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Hopefully, with the transition into life somewhat similar to the pre-COVID “era”, we will be better equipped and informed to stay safe and healthy.

As for now, keep those masks on and stay sanitized! Happy social distancing!
