Abraham Lincoln was born in a one room log cabin in Kentucky, and eventually became America’s sixteenth president. This is proof that anyone can be anything.
When Abe was 7 years old his family moved from Kentucky to Indiana. The long trip was difficult for the whole family: Abe’s parents Nancy and Thomas and his older sister Sarah. Once at their new location, the family spent a week building their house, with help from their new neighbors. Helping each other out was the pioneer way.
When Abe was 9, his mother, aunt, and uncle died from milk fever. 6 months later, Abe’s father searched for a new wife. Mr. Lincoln came back with a step-mother and 3 step siblings for Abe and Sarah. Abe soon learned to love his new family members.
As he aged, Abe grew very tall and was hired out to nearby farms to split fence rails, and all the money he made was given to his father, as he was not yet of legal age. Abe took a job helping a man take cargo to New Orleans by boat. Along the way Abe decided he didn’t want to be a farmer his whole life, and that he wanted to make his living somewhere else. When he got back from New Orleans the family moved once again.
Abe was technically old enough to part from his family and go his own way, but he decided to help them settle into their new home. When the Lincoln’s once again decided to move, Abe didn’t go with them. He wanted to make his living elsewhere.
He was eventually elected to the legislature, and had his sights set on becoming a lawyer. He ended up running for president in 1860. He was elected and became America’s sixteenth president. He was re-elected for a second term of presidency, but was assassinated in 1865.
While president, Abe helped stop slavery and brought the United States of America together during a difficult time. He stood up for others and outwitted his enemies. Abraham Lincoln is said to be one of the greatest presidents there ever was, and it’s hard to disagree.
Abraham Lincoln started out as an unknown farm boy and is now known by every person in America. Abolishing slavery and being a hero to all, Abraham Lincoln has his face on every US penny and five dollar bill. Abraham Lincoln is a historical figure we all know, and we know him because of his bravery, kindness, and drive to help others.
