My Experience in YIG

By Marialys Garza, Green Bay

This is my first year in Youth in Government. Youth in Government is very new to me.  I was introduced to YIG by my mom because Rudy, one of the delegation directors from the YMCA, told my mom about it. Rudy was very helpful. He told me everything about YIG, thanks to him I am on the Madison trip.

My sister is an eighth grader at St.Thomas More, and she is in the legislative branch. She had told me a little bit about YIG, but I didn’t know much about it. Rudy gave my mom a call and explained to her what YIG was and the Madison trip. My mom told me about it. It sounded interesting, and I wanted to know more about it. She asked and told me I could go if I was interested. After Rudy talked to my mom, he invited my sister and me to attend a YIG meeting at the YMCA.

I was a bit nervous because I did not know what to expect, but the meeting went by fast and I met great people. They told us what YIG was about, and I decided to do media. I am looking forward to recording with the equipment I haven’t used before.

In the last YIG meeting I attended, I learned how to set up a tripod and an LED light. Even though I was a bit hesitant about being a part of YIG at first, I did not let that fear stop me. I am now a part of YIG and the media team and am looking forward to this new experience of visiting Madison for the first time, learning new things, and making memories that will last a lifetime.
