How Do Delegates Feel About Leadership Corps?

By Killian Winkel, Fox Cities Delegation

Leadership Corps is meant for 7th graders, to teach them what each branch does and help them make the choice of which branch to do. Almost all the delegates in Leadership Corps feel that it is helpful and fun. They love the opportunity to make friends and learn about how the government and YIG work.

Unfortunately, they aren’t given a choice whether they want to do this branch or if they’d like to try one of the main three. While some of the delegates are fine with this, some want to “jump right in” and start with the branch of their choice. One idea was to add Leadership Corps as an option for 7th graders, but let them decide whether or not they’re going to do it. Even after learning about everything, next year they will be forced to do the Legislative branch. Most of the delegates feel that after they have learned about all the branches, they should get to choose what branch they do, not someone else.

Besides that small problem, almost everyone likes Leadership Corps. They like how they can see how each branch works and have the chance to try them out. As of this writing, they were writing and debating bills with Lena Watts, one the Fox Cities Legislative Leaders. The delegates were having a fun time talking and researching their bills. They also have watched how the Judicial branch worked, and have written for the Media branch.

Everyone I asked had a great time and is planning to come to Youth in Government next year. Most even have the branch they’re going to be in picked out. All in all, Leadership Corps is a great idea with only a few flaws.
